Internet giant Google denied rumors of a cancellation of its next low-cost smartphone earlier in April, saying the Pixel 5a 5G would launch as planned this year. And the new test version of Android 12 Developer Preview released the day before confirmed that the new product will inherit the processor from last year’s flagship of the brand.
The authors of the 9to5Google portal examined the Android 12 Developer Preview files and found numerous references to a certain “Barbet” device with an sm7250 processor in the firmware code. Presumably, the Pixel 5a 5G is hiding under the code name “Barbet”, and the sm7250 is the model number of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor. It turns out that the new Google smartphone will be built on the same platform as last year’s Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G is a mid-range 7nm chipset. In addition to the 5G modem, it includes an eight-core Kryo 475 processor, clocked at up to 2.4 GHz, and Adreno 620 graphics.
The fact that it uses the same processor as last year will certainly add more confusion to Google’s Pixel lineup. Moreover, the Pixel 5a 5G, according to the leaked renders, will outwardly be a copy of the Pixel 4a 5G with a slight difference in size. But at the same time, it is interesting that the inexpensive version with the prefix A in the title will be able to match the performance of the flagship Pixel 5 in terms of performance.
How the Pixel 5a 5G will differ from its predecessors is still a mystery. It is possible that Google will bet on improved cameras and a reduced price.
