Pixel 6 series could get Face ID counterpart, but Google missed deadline

In anticipation of the release of the flagship Pixel 6 series, insiders every now and then attributed to new smartphones the facial recognition function, similar to Face ID in the iPhone. However, the new flagships of Google, contrary to rumors, did not receive this feature, being content with a fingerprint scanner on the side. But now it turns out that internet giant Google did want to implement a face scanner in the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, but it seems to have missed the deadline.

The fact that Google was developing a face scanner for the new generation of Pixel was reported by a member of the XDA Developers forum under the pseudonym Freak07. He found the corresponding source code in the core of the Pixel 6 series system. By the way, back in July a patch appeared that reduced the power consumption of the processor during face unlocking. The function was then codenamed “Tuscany”.

The exact reason why the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones never received a face recognition system is unknown. It is possible that the work on the function was not completed on time. And it remains to be hoped that this option will appear in the next generations of Google’s flagship smartphones.
