Members of Palácio do Planalto do not intend to respond directly to the attempts of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to politicize the repatriation of Brazilians and their Palestinian families who are in the Gaza Strip. Government sources assess that the silence avoids giving any kind of protagonism to the far right.
This Friday (10), since the morning, a hashtag that alludes to Bolsonaro as the person responsible for helping Brazilians get on the Rafah ticket list has been among the most talked about topics on X (formerly Twitter).
For members of the government, the former president is trying to escape political “ostracism”, taking advantage of the situation of civilians in Gaza. Furthermore, they assess that responses to the former president are already made by PT parliamentarians and activists.
The former president told CNN who asked an advisor to Benjamin Netanyahu for support for Brazilians leaving the conflict area. When contacted, the Israeli embassy in Brasília did not comment on this possible contact between the former president and Netanyahu’s advisor.
The strategy of “official silence” is the same as that adopted in relation to the former president’s meeting with the Israeli ambassador, Daniel Zonshine.
The government assesses that any movement at this time could make the situation “critical”. The priority is the departure of the 34 civilians and, after, the arrival of the repatriates.
