A plane from Lufthansa airline spent about 10 minutes flying without anyone riding the aircraft. The unusual case occurred after the commander left the cabin to go to the bathroom, and then the co -pilot suffers a sudden illness.
The incident took place on February 17, 2024, but the results of the investigation by the Spanish Civil Aviation Accident Investigation and Incident Incidents (Ciaiac) were only published on Thursday (15).
The LH77X flight, which carried 205 people, departed from Frankfurt, Germany, towards Seville, Spain. At the time of the event, it was in the cruise phase – that is, at constant altitude and speed – and with the autopilot on.
According to information from the investigation report, the pilot left the command booth at 10:31 am for “physiological needs” and went to the bathroom. Prior to that, he had talked to the co -pilot about climatic conditions and the operation of the aircraft. According to the captain, the co -pilot seemed “skilled and warned” at that time.
The pilot returned at 10:39, but could not access the cabin. He tried to enter the password four times, to no avail.
Then a crew member tried to call the command booth, but there was no answer. Alarmed by the situation, the pilot entered the emergency code.
Moments later, the co -pilot opened the cabin door manually. Still according to the report, he was “pale, sweating and moving strangely.”
Subsequently, the investigation concluded that the cause of the co -pilot’s sudden disease was the manifestation of the symptom of a condition that had not been detected previously during medical examinations. He had valid certification and had no restrictions to fly. After the episode, however, his medical certificate was suspended.
Lufthansa did not comment on the case.
After the case, the commission responsible for the investigation made a formal recommendation to the European Aviation Agency to re -evaluate procedures and make it mandatory to permanent two persons authorized in the command cabin throughout the flight.
