The Voepass ATR-72-500 model aircraft that crashed in Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo, last Friday (9), underwent maintenance after structural damage in March of this year. The information was confirmed to CNN by the Brazilian Air Force, through the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa), and is included in the aeronautical occurrence report. The accident in the Metropolitan region of Campinas (SP) left 62 dead.
Hours after the crash, messages about the condition of the aircraft flooded social media. One day before the plane crashed, writer and journalist Daniela Arbex traveled on the same crashed aircraft and recorded images of passengers feeling unwell due to the air conditioning, which was turned off.
According to Cenipa’s final report, the incident that caused damage to the aircraft in March of this year was caused by a failure or malfunction of one of the aircraft’s components, which displayed a low hydraulic oil level message.
The occurrence history states that the aircraft underwent the expected procedures and continued its journey. According to the report, the problem was caused after a “abnormal contact of the aircraft with the runway” at the time of landing. The ATR was traveling from Recife to Salvador.
Cenipa clarifies that the SIPAER Panel refers to events such as “sudden landings”, when the front landing gear wheel touches the ground prematurely, the tail hits the ground and the wingtip touches during landing or takeoff operations.
Research in Vinhedo (SP)
Cenipa agents went to the scene of the accident in Vinhedo hours after the incident. Investigators are already analyzing the plane’s black boxes, found among the wreckage. The materials arrived in Brasília on Saturday morning (10) and were forwarded by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
