Planes stuck at Berlin airport: All flights cancelled

Disturbance prevails today, Wednesday (25/1) at airport of Berlin where ground workers strike and planes are grounded.

All the flights to and from Berlin/Brandenburg Airport (BER) were cancelled, due to the ground workers’ warning strike called by the Ver.di union ahead of negotiations to sign new sectoral contracts.

The strike, which began at 3.30am and will end at 11.59pm, affects 6,000 ground handling, security and baggage handling workers and affects around 35,000 passengers as no flights can operate today.

Airlines have given their customers the option to rebook or travel by rail. In some cases, as reported by the Athens News Agency, flights to Dresden and Leipzig/Halle airports are being diverted.

Ver.di is demanding increases of €500/month for workers and one-year sectoral contracts, while the employers’ side is pushing for significantly longer contracts. The next phases of negotiations are scheduled for January 30 and February 8, and new strike actions are not excluded.
