“Guess what doctor who’s back in the square?” With the cliché pardoned, Planet Hemp – one of the bands with the greatest repercussion in Brazilian music in the 90s – released their first song in more than two decades.
It’s been 22 years since Marcelo D2 and BNegão’s group released the verse above, from “Ex-Quadrilha da Fumaça”, on the album “A Invasão do Sagaz Homem Fumaça”.
However, this Tuesday (20), the hiatus of unreleased was broken with the single “Dystopia”, a partnership with the São Paulo rapper Criolo.
The song, which was accompanied by a music video, paves the way for the release of a full Planet Hemp album, which is due out in late October, but the title has yet to be revealed.
“Dystopia” opens with a posthumous tribute to a former Rio partner of the band, the founder of O Rappa, lyricist and drummer, Marcelo Yuka – who died in 2019.
“When the instrument of fear doesn’t work, we acquire an unimaginable power”, said Yuka in an interview with Midia Ninja, in 2016. The phrase precedes the introduction with a riff from guitarist Nobru.
The lyrics, signed by vocalists D2, BNegão and producer Nave Beatz, have the protest tone characteristic of Planet Hemp’s entire career.
“Politicians become heroes, judges become superheroes. They are above the law, above all, above us”, sings D2, also director of the clip – which varies takes of protests, police raids and scenes of musicians dressed as gardeners in an open field.
“Planet Hemp has always been a protest movement. Our lyrics, which one day took us to prison, are a reflection of what we think about this system, about the collective ideal and our way of expressing our manifesto through music. It goes far beyond a political discourse, it is a much deeper musical discourse about freedom of thought.”

Planet Hemp – Dystopia (D2, BNegão, Ship)
Is everything too crazy or am I too crazy
Those in power need to fear fear of the people
They lie lie lie to make you vulnerable
Anyone who “believes” blindly is manipulable
Everybody fights, everybody fucked up
There’s no good guy anymore, now everyone is a thug
That will be it, will it? That’s right until when?
Blind faith radicalism, really? You can only be kidding
It’s all wrong brother, so take the vision
Poor defends rich, employee the boss (no)
Politician becomes hero judges superheroes
Are above the laws above all above us
Alienated people party cult of ignorance
If you say a good citizen, you only have ambition greed and greed
My cross I carry
This hell is mine
Superman
super fly
super carioca
super me
I know the strength of the song, I know
Fight with heart, I know
It seems like an illusion, but I know
That I don’t walk alone, no
It’s like looking at the sun, I know
The strength comes from within I know
It seems like an illusion, but I know
that I don’t surrender
My dream, I put it on the table
I see life, long trail, coming to light
Definitely coming out of a coma
PHASE
mental
normosis acts
if it’s social, notice
(For)
that I ignore
let ignorance end
The eyes of the blind, they want to judge you
leave it with
leave it with
let condemn
This is to free
seed germinate
the spirit in charge
freedom for minds
ALREADY
DISOBEY
OBEY
the wave of the guys
It is to make the general believe that there is only one and only way of life in this world:
the model controlled by them.
RETHINK
REFLECTS
REFUSE
RESIST!
