Plaques honoring dead children and police officers are torn down in Rio

Dozens of plaques in honor of the victims of violence in Rio were vandalized this Sunday (16), in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, south of the state capital.

On display since 2015, the signs bore the names of children and police officers who were killed in Rio. During the vandalism, a banner with the following sentence: “Mayor, remember the favela” was also removed.

Responsible for the tribute, the NGO Rio de Paz reported that it was surprised by the image and went to the Leblon police station, on the morning of this Monday (17), to report the case. A video circulating on the internet shows the moment a man removes the plates.

According to the president of the NGO, Antonio Carlos Costa, 70 plaques with the names of police officers and children victims of violence will be reinstalled this week.

“We are witnessing an act of vandalism. This installation represents the constant reminder that poor children and police officers are dying in Rio de Janeiro. A monument to peace, the sanctity of human life and the fight against violence -in one of the most bloodthirsty cities in the world- was unjustifiably destroyed. We repudiate this crime against the fight for a culture of defense of human rights and we are committed to redoing all the signs this week”, he said.

A CNN has already requested and awaits a position from the Civil Police on the investigation of the case.
