Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced it is suspending operations in Brazil “with immediate effect” due to “censorship orders” it claims were issued by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes. X says Moraes secretly threatened one of its legal representatives in Brazil, saying he would arrest him if he did not comply with an order to take down some content from the platform. Brazil’s Supreme Court did not respond to a request for comment. X remains available for the people of Brazil, billionaire Elon Musk’s platform added. Earlier this year, Moraes ordered X to block some accounts as he investigates so-called “digital fighters” accused of spreading fake news and hate messages during the term of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro.
