PlayStation 5 can’t do that: Xbox Series X and Series S become the only consoles in the world with support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos

Microsoft today announced support for Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range for the current generation of Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. The new Xbox consoles are now the only ones in the world to offer support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Microsoft said more than 100 next-generation games optimized for Xbox Series consoles either already support Dolby Vision or will support it in the future. Future games like Halo Infinite will also launch with Dolby Vision support out of the box.

Microsoft and Dolby are also working with developers to bring Dolby Vision into older games. Games that already support HDR10 or Microsoft Auto HDR will also automatically update to Dolby Vision when connected to a compatible display.

Microsoft previously introduced Dolby Vision on the Xbox series consoles for multimedia applications. Apps like Netflix and Apple TV can turn on Dolby Vision when connected to a compatible TV. This feature was then made available for games in beta testing. Now testing is over.

Dolby Vision is a step up from HDR10. The technology is capable of delivering higher peak brightness as well as lower minimum brightness compared to HDR10, resulting in an even wider dynamic range. Dolby Vision also supports 12-bit color, and while there are no 12-bit displays yet, it makes the standard more promising.

In comparison, the Sony PlayStation 5 doesn’t have native support for Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos.
