Playstation Spartacus will become a reality this week. This is Sony’s answer to Xbox Game Pass

Sony is gearing up to introduce a new video game subscription service for the PlayStation this week, sources say. The service is in development, codenamed Spartacus, and is considered Sony’s answer to Xbox Game Pass.

According to Bloomberg, the new service will combine elements of Playstation Now and Playstation Plus and will offer multiple tiers that will include modern games and classics from older generations of PlayStation.

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass is a huge success for its price-to-feature ratio. With a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual subscription, users can download and play any game available with Game Pass. In this regard, Microsoft is doing a great job of offering an extensive library of games, as well as making the best games available on the first day of release (like Halo Infinite) as part of Game Pass.

Sony, however, is not going down that path and will likely keep some games available for purchase only for a certain period of time after release. As such, users may not be able to try out new games like God of War Ragnarok on this service anytime soon.

Another big benefit of Xbox Game Pass is its availability on PC. This will also be a problem for Sony, as the company has a significantly longer list of console exclusives compared to Xbox. The company recently announced that some of its previously released Playstation Exclusive games will be coming to PC soon, however, it will likely be some time before Sony can build a library that is large enough to attract PC gamers.
