Five people were arrested this Tuesday morning (14) on suspicion of stealing 300 kg of copper wires. The case took place in front of Praça Paris, in the Glória neighborhood, South Zone of Rio. According to the Military Police, in the action, the agents managed to recover around 300 kg of power cable wires that would be stolen by the criminals.

The agents also seized a car, an axe, a generator and a marble saw. The case was forwarded to the 12th DP (Copacabana). When contacted, Light, the electricity concessionaire that supplies Rio, reported that teams called the police who arrived at the scene to protect the employees and recover the stolen material.

In the first four months of 2024, Light recorded 105 incidents of cable theft, representing an increase of 164% compared to the same period in 2023. In total, in the previous year, 373 instances of theft were recorded.

From January to April this year alone, the company already had a loss representing a total of R$1.77 million and 12,845 meters of lost cables. In 2023, acts of vandalism also caused the company to spend almost R$4 million to restore the electrical network, the company said in a note.

In the ranking of neighborhoods with the highest incidence, the Center appears with 50 occurrences; followed by Copacabana, with 14 cases; and Ipanema, with 13 records, in the South Zone.

According to the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, agents from the 41st BPM (Irajá) were called during the early hours of the morning to report a theft at a substation of the MetrôRio concessionaire, in the Colégio neighborhood, in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro.

This Tuesday morning (14), at around 6:20 am, MetrôRio reported that operations on Lines 1, 2 and 4 would have been reestablished and all stations in the system would now be open and operating normally, without restrictions.
