A military police officer was shot dead on Wednesday afternoon during an attempted robbery at Avenida Nazaré in Anchieta, North Zone of Rio. The victim was identified as Cape Fábio Cordeiro Mateus dos Santos, who was off at the time of the crime. He was packed in the command of Pacifying Police (CPP). During the action, a second person was also shot.
According to the Military Police, agents of the 41st BPM (Irajá) were called for the incident and found the lifeless policeman. Witnesses reported that the victim was on his private motorcycle when he was surprised by two criminals on another motorcycle. After shooting the agent and stealing their belongings, the robbers fled, abandoning both vehicles – both used by them and the policeman.
The Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC) is responsible for the investigations and tries to identify the perpetrators of the crime.
With the death of Cape Fabio, the number of security agents shot in the Rio Metropolitan region reaches 43 in 2025, according to data from the Fogo Cruzado Institute. Of these, 26 died and 17 were injured. Among the shots, 24 were out of service – 19 died and 5 were injured.
The data represent a significant increase over the same period of 2024, when 24 agents shot in the region, with 7 deaths and 17 injured. That year, 12 of the affected were out of service.
