The Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro began monitoring the Rio bus station with facial recognition cameras. According to the PM, 43 cameras were installed and are already in operation in the terminal.
They will be integrated into the corporation’s Video Monitoring and Facial Recognition System, which will also have full-time access to images of movement at the bus station.
The system, which has been implemented since last New Year’s Eve in Rio, has already helped the PM make 200 arrests in the city.
“The number of arrests demonstrates the effectiveness of this new tool in removing criminals from circulation. We are thus making our contribution to the Justice system”, Colonel Marcelo Nogueira, secretary of SEPM, stated in a statement.
The mark was reached on June 20th after military police arrested a man for robbery in the center of the municipality.
Of the 200 arrests, almost 50% were due to non-payment of child support. Robbery (38), drug trafficking (16), theft (11) and homicide (10) were the other most recorded and solved incidents.
