The military police officer suspected of killing a 17-year-old teenager and injuring another 19-year-old, in the Ondina neighborhood, in Salvador, was removed from the corporation’s operational duties. The decision was taken by the Military Police of Bahia (PMBA) after confirming its participation in the incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday (1).
According to the PM, the soldier has been reassigned to administrative duties while investigations continue. So far, no one has been arrested.
In a note sent to CNN the Military Police of Bahia reported that it opened a Disciplinary Administrative Process (PAD) to investigate the circumstances of what happened.
“The Military Police Internal Affairs has already started the necessary administrative procedures. The weapon under his responsibility was collected and handed over to the Civil Police, the body responsible for criminal investigation,” the PMBA said.
The corporation reinforced, in a statement, its commitment to ethics and transparency.
The case gained repercussion after images recorded by witnesses circulated on social media, showing the police officer, not in uniform and off duty, shooting at young people who had surrendered on the ground, in addition to verbally and physically attacking them.
Gabriel Santos Costa, aged 17, succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene, while Haziel Martins Costa, aged 19, was rescued and remains hospitalized at the State General Hospital (HGE).
On Tuesday (4), the Civil Police of Bahia requested the police officer’s preventive arrest. The Court of Justice of Bahia informed the CNN who is analyzing the request.
The police officer gave a statement on Monday (2), claiming to have acted in self-defense after an alleged assault.
