The Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ-SP) suspended the Popular jury of military police Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo , Accused of killing Jiu-Jitsu fighter Leandro La with a shot in the head . The decision was published by the court on Wednesday (22).
The police trial was scheduled for today (22) and tomorrow (23) this year. A new date should be set, however, there is no forecast yet.
The decision was made by Judge Marco Antônio Cogan, of the TJ-SP. The lawyers of the suspect claimed that the judge damaged the right of defense, because three days before the trial, he declined to hear the testimonials of the private experts, claiming that the written opinions were enough.
Judge Marco Antonio determined that the jury should be marked urgently, as it is a arrested defendant. In addition, the other judge must present formal explanations about the case.
Understand the case
The case occurred in August 2022, when Leandro Lo, a world champion of the sport, was shot in the head during a concert at the Syrian Club, in the south of São Paulo. Since then, Lieutenant Velozo remains preventively detained in the Romão Gomes prison in the northern part of the city.
According to police investigations, Leandro Lo involved in a discussion at the club. At first, the fighter would have toppled the military policeman Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, who would have caused him.
Velozo, then, would have withdrawn from the scene and returned armed, making a fatal shot on the athlete’s head. After the shooting, the policeman would still have kicked it twice, even with the fighter already unconscious on the floor, before leaving the scene.
Henrique Velozo presented himself to the Military Police Office on the day after the crime and was taken to the police station to give testimony. The court ordered its temporary arrest, which was later converted into preventive. The PM was indicted for homicide for futile reasons, and the case is still under investigation of the 16th DP, in Vila Clementino.
Despite being detained preventively, military policeman Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo continues to receive his salary from Lieutenant PM. In a decision of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), determined that the government of São Paulo resumed the payment of the monthly soldering to the police, under the understanding that the suspension of remuneration would be legal only after a final judgment.
