The trial of military police Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo, Accused of killing Jiu-Jitsu fighter Leandro La with a shot in the head was scheduled for May 22 and 23 this year, by the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP). The trial will start at 10am, in the plenary of the Barra Funda Criminal Forum, in the West Zone of the state capital.
The case occurred in August 2022, when Leandro Lo, a world champion of the sport, was shot in the head during a concert at the Syrian Club, in the south of São Paulo. Since then, Lieutenant Velozo remains preventively detained in the Romão Gomes prison in the northern part of the city.
According to police investigations, Leandro Lo involved in a discussion at the club. At first, the fighter would have toppled the military policeman Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, who would have caused him.
Velozo, then, would have withdrawn from the scene and returned armed, making a fatal shot on the athlete’s head. After the shooting, the policeman would still have kicked it twice, even with the fighter already unconscious on the floor, before leaving the scene.
Henrique Velozo presented himself to the Military Police Office on the day after the crime and was taken to the police station to give testimony. The court ordered its temporary arrest, which was later converted into preventive. The PM was indicted for homicide for futile reasons, and the case is still under investigation of the 16th DP, in Vila Clementino.
Despite being detained preventively, military policeman Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo continues to receive his salary from Lieutenant PM. In a decision of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), determined that the government of São Paulo resumed the payment of the monthly soldering to the police, under the understanding that the suspension of remuneration would be legal only after a final judgment.
Leandro Lo, at the age of 33, was a jiu-jitsu legend, collecting eight world titles, as well as achievements in several other important championships. His death generated great commotion in the sports world, with various manifestations of grief and honors. The Brazilian Confederation of Jiu-Jitsu lamented the loss of “one of the greatest athletes our sport has ever produced”.
