The spokesman of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, Ivan Blaz, confirmed to the CNN that the military police officers who work as prison agents in the Special Battalion of the PM in Niterói will be interrogated by the internal affairs department.
They should be heard later this month of May, since the open inquiry lasts 30 days, extendable for another 30.
In parallel with the PM’s internal investigation, a series of changes were defined by the state secretariat that takes care of the folder. According to Blaz, there is already a process to purchase an X-ray machine that has been stopped since 2020 and is now in the process of updating prices at the state attorney’s office.
The intention of the device, added to the imposition of a search on family members and visitors of prisoners, aims to prevent the entry of irregular items.
During the search at the end of April, marijuana cigarettes, vials of testosterone, injections, cash and food from restaurants were found – all prohibited items. Seven cell phone devices were also found in an area where there were eight prisoners.
The PM also committed to making changes to the structure of the place, placing more military police officers in the BEP, changing agents and also promoting training for police officers who work in the prison. Blaz claims that these acts are already underway.
The changes are a consequence of the benefits revealed after two inspections, one by the Criminal Execution Court and another by the PM itself. Irregularities were identified in the cells and in the officers’ living area.
The place, which has a capacity for 20 detainees, was occupied by only eight people. They had access to a 42-inch TV and adaptations in the cells such as an extra shower, rubber flooring and heat insulation.
The former governor’s lawyers are preparing an appeal to the Court of Justice to try to reverse the transfer.
