PMs are investigated in rescue scheme of stolen vehicles in RJ

Three military police are investigated for participation in an alleged rescue collection scheme of stolen vehicles in Rio de Janeiro. According to the Civil Police, in less than a year, the gang moved more than $ 11 million with the “recovery” of 1,600 vehicles.

The PMs were targeted by search and seizure warrants in high standard properties, such as Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Barra da Tijuca, in the West Zone of Rio, as well as addresses in Baixada Fluminense. In total there were 11 warrants – every search, none of prison. Cell phones, computers, weapons, vehicles and other materials were seized.

“The investigation points out that they provided services to companies of prompt response. The continuity of the findings will clarify to what extent this involvement goes,” said Mauro Cesar da Silva Junior, holder of the car theft and car theft.

In a statement, the Military Police Department reported that the Corregedoria follows the investigations and established an internal procedure to investigate the facts. Two of the agents are active and one is in the reserve.

According to the Civil Police, the scheme benefited criminals of at least two factions: Red Command (CV) and Third Command (TC). About 80% of vehicle thefts occurred in the capital and Baixada Fluminense. The rest was registered in São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region, and a small portion in the interior of the state.

“Never before in the history of the Civil Police have we had an investigation on vehicle theft with this bias. Ineditism lies in the fact that Vehicular Protection cooperatives use ready -to -respond companies to rescue stolen vehicles,” explained Civil Police Secretary Felipe Curi.

How the scheme worked

The inquiry revealed that vehicle recovering companies – known as “prompt response” – hired by vehicle protection associations and cooperatives, negotiated directly with traffickers and receivers the payment for return of vehicles.

The goal was to prevent the associations from needing to indemnify customers based on the FIPE table. According to police, this model fostered the increase in vehicle thefts in the second half of last year and in the first two months of this year, especially in the capital and Baixada.

When a vehicle protected by an association was stolen, employees of these “prompt response” companies triggered criminals in the communities dominated by factions to negotiate the return.

“For criminals, it’s a quick, safe and highly profitable way to make money,” says the Civil Police.

The business was also lucrative for companies. On average, each redemption yielded more than R $ 6,000 – part of the redemption of the ransom to criminals, and the rest, as a profit from the company.

Investigations continue to detail the entire gear gear.

“Trafficking profited from these payments. The customer unknowingly helped feed a criminal chain that, in turn, increased the incidence of theft. He could be the next victim himself. It is, in fact, a criminal industry,” said Felipe Curi.

The action is part of Operation Tourniquet. Since September 2024, the task force has arrested more than 520 people and has recovered about $ 37 million in stolen vehicles and cargo. The actions also resulted in the blockade of more than R $ 70 million in goods and values.
