PMs involved in death of medical student in SP are removed from office

The military police officers involved in the death of a 22-year-old medical student in a hotel in the south of São Paulo will be removed from their operational activities until investigations into the case are completed.

Marco Aurélio Cardenas Acosta was shot inside a hotel in Vila Mariana after a police approach. In the police report, the version presented by the police officers was that Acosta tried to grab a gun from one of them, at which point the officer fired.

“At the time, the young man struck the police vehicle and tried to escape. When approached, he attacked the police, being injured. The boy was promptly taken to Ipiranga hospital, but he did not survive the injury”, says the Public Security Secretariat, in a statement.

The police report also states that, according to the police, Acosta “was quite upset and aggressive” before getting into a physical fight with the agents.

The ministry added that the images captured by the agents’ body cameras will be attached to investigations conducted by the Military Police Internal Affairs and the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP).

“The police officers involved in the incident gave a statement, were indicted in an investigation and will remain away from operational activities until the investigations are concluded”, adds the note.

The case was registered as a homicide resulting from police intervention. The pistol used in the shooting was seized and the scene was examined.
