PMs save baby that was choked on the German complex, in Rio

Military police from the Pacifying Police Unit of the German Complex in Rio de Janeiro performed a maneuver to save the life of a slender baby.

After the mother asked for help from the police, they provided care and applied the so -called Heimlich maneuver (Read below). After being revived, the baby was sent with the mother to a Emergency Care Unit (UPA).

In a video published by the Military Police on social networks, the girl’s grandmother thanked the agents who saved the girl.

What is Heimlich’s maneuver

Heimlich’s maneuver is a method that serves to clear the airways, increasing pressure on the abdomen and chest, helping the person expel the object that obstructs the air passage.

THE choking It is a manifestation of the body to expel food or object that may have obstructed the airways during swallowing (swallowing act). It happens when the object goes to the trachea, which allows the passage of air.

When we swallow, the epiglottis, a structure located behind the tongue, closes, blocking the passage of food to the lungs and forwarding it to the stomach. When this valve does not block the passage of food, drink or object, it can lead to choking.

In severe cases, choking can leave the person unconscious or even asphyxia death . Acting quickly can be a way to avoid serious complications, including the use of techniques such as Heimlich’s maneuver.

How heimlich’s maneuver is done

In adults, Heimlich’s maneuver should be done If the person is conscious . The rescuer must approach from behind, using his arms to wrap the abdomen of those who are choking. Putting both hands together, with your right hand closed under the left, pressure is made in the region between the navel and the sternum bone (located in front of the chest). This pressure should be done up and in, until the food or object is expelled.

Already in young children, the procedure is the same, but the rescuer can perform it kneeling or sitting with the child on his lap to facilitate the maneuver.

How it is made in babies

In babies, the procedure should be done differently: the baby should be positioned with the mouth down, the chest supported over the rescuer’s forearm and the head lower than the body. The rescuer should make beats between the scapulas five times, using the palm firmly, but being careful not to hurt the baby.

Then the person who is performing the maneuver should examine the child’s mouth and remove any visible object. If the airways remain obstructed, the baby turned up, with the head down, and pushing with the index finger and the medium inside and up over the baby’s sternum.

Then you need to examine the child’s mouth again to look for some visible object. Rescue should perform the procedure as many times as necessary – crying is a good sign of recovery.

The Fire Department warns that these measures should only be performed if the child is conscious. If not, it is necessary to seek medical help urgently.
