PM's suspected of killing police investigating militias in Rio are arrested

Two Military Police warrant officers were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the death of PM corporal Vaneza Lobão, aged 31, in November last year, in Rio de Janeiro.

In a statement, the Press Office of the State Secretariat of Military Police highlighted “that the command of the corporation does not condone the commission of crimes or misconduct by its members, punishing those involved with scathing rigor when the facts are established”.

According to the agency, the military police investigation initiated at the time of the crime “is ongoing and the corporation, through its correctional area, continues to fully collaborate with the continuity of the investigations.”

According to the investigations, the arrested agents carried out research on Vaneza in official databases, seeking to monitor the police officer, gathering information about her routine.

The two were assigned to the 27th BPM (Santa Cruz), and the 31st BPM, in Recreio.

Until the end of last year, one of them was assigned to the same battalion as the dead PM, at the 8th DJPM (Military Judiciary Police Station), where Lobão worked in the Intelligence Sector.

Created in the heyday of the Pacifying Police Units, the DPJM are aimed at investigating the participation of police officers in both the militias and in the animal game.

The agent who was investigating the actions of militias in Rio was killed on November 24 last year, around 9:30 pm, when she was the target of rifle shots by hooded people, while opening the garage at home to store her own car.

According to information from Hotline, the criminals were already waiting for the agent.

At the time, with Vaneza's death, the number of agents killed in violent actions in the state of Rio de Janeiro rose to 52.

In the early hours of November 25, one day after the crime, a Military Police team from the 27th BPM arrested a militia member in the Madean subdivision, also in Santa Cruz, during efforts to locate suspects in Vaneza's death. A firearm was found with the man, which was seized.

At the time, the then Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, offered help from the Federal Police in investigating the murder.

In a publication last year, the then minister lamented “the terrible crime committed against police officer Vaneza Lobão, in Rio de Janeiro”, expressed solidarity with the family and “colleagues in the corporation” and stated that he had instructed “the Federal Police to help with the investigations , which is the responsibility of state authorities”.

Who was Vaneza?

Graduated in law, Vaneza joined the corporation in 2013 and was a valued professional. Shortly before being executed, she was decorated by the Military Police with the “Loyalty and constancy” badge. During the corporal training course, the Rio native, who was 31 years old, graduated with top marks. She dreamed of making a career in the corporation.
