PMSP Commander reacts to Lewandowski’s speech: problem is in the legislation

The Commander General of the São Paulo Military Police, Colonel Cássio Araújo de Freitas, reacted to the speech of the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, about the police “arrest badly”, in conversation with CNN.

Lewandowski said in a lecture last week that “the police arrest badly and the judiciary is forced to let go.” Colonel Cássio Araújo de Freitas, who also chairs the National Council of Commanders General, said that the minister’s speech was “unfortunate” and that “arrests and loose” is not an indicator of quality either the police or justice, is a reflection of the legislation.

“Police officers arrest and justice acts on the legislation. The problem is that the legislation is porous and created a great imbalance between the citizen and crime. Very few people are serving time today in Brazil. And this is neither the police nor the judiciary,” he told the CNN.

The commander defended efforts for revisions in the legislation, such as the PEC of Public Security, and said he works well with Minister Ricardo Lewandowski.

Still in conversation with CNN Colonel Cássio cited the example of “nanotrafication”, a drug distribution modality that takes advantage of breaches in trafficking legislation and has given more work to the police.

THE CNN Try to contact the Ministry of Justice and awaits return.
