Podcast: ‘Hypocrisy’ of powers prevents solution to conflict in Israel

In this episode, Américo Martins talks to Camila Olivo directly from Tel Aviv, Israel, about the developments in the conflict between the country and the radical Islamic group Hamas.

On Wednesday (18), the United States vetoed the resolution drafted by Brazil for the conflict in the UN Security Council, while twelve countries voted in favor of the text. Russia and the United Kingdom abstained.

Américo assesses that Brazil’s resolution was perfectly balanced and that it took into account humanitarian aid as the main point, which should be “the absolute priority” for everyone.

“The veto shows the great hypocrisy of the international policy of the large countries that have the right to veto in the UN Assembly”, he analyzes. “The great powers are, for their own selfish interests, neglecting the power and duty they have to try to ensure the security of Israelis, Palestinians and the world at large.”

Danielle Ayres, professor of International Relations at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), who also participates in this episode, highlights that Brazilian participation in drafting the resolution was “brilliant from the point of view of Brazil’s role in the rotating presidency of the Security Council ”.

The scholar reaffirms what Américo said by highlighting that “the veto reflects much more conflicting political interests between the United States and its adversaries in the international system than the resolution necessarily not meeting the interests of society”.

Listen also: the attack that hit the Baptista Al-Ahli Hospital, in Gaza; the political calculation for a land incursion into Gaza by the Israeli army; the agreements to open a humanitarian corridor between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
