In his first speech at the opening of the United Nations (UN) climate conference, COP 28, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that “the planet is fed up with unfulfilled climate agreements, with climate reduction targets of neglected carbon emissions, of financial aid to poor countries that are not enough, of eloquent and empty speeches”.
Senior analyst Américo Martins, who is following the event in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, states that the international community’s perception regarding Brazil’s role in combating climate change has “completely changed”, mainly due to “the results that the government achieved in terms of reducing deforestation in the Amazon.”
According to Américo, COP28 is mainly focused on two themes: reducing the use of fossil fuels and the consequent investment in a clean energy transition; and the lack of aid from developed countries to developing countries to mitigate the damage of climate change.
