In a statement to the Civil Police, Diego dos Anjos, husband of Deise Moura dos Anjos, accused of poisoning in the Torres cake case, stated that he had an argument with her in November last year about where his mother-in-law, Zeli dos Anjos, would spend her Christmas.
THE CNN had access to the testimony. Diego reports about a disagreement with Deise that occurred on November 21, 2024. “Deise wanted Zeli to spend Christmas with them (her, husband and son), and her mother-in-law wanted to spend the date with her sisters”, appears in the testimony.
According to the report, Diego left home and went to his mother’s residence in Canoas, only returning to Nova Santa Rita on November 25th. “In this disagreement, in fact, he held Deise by the arms, as he was throwing the clothes at the deponent”, it states.
Diego, Deise and their son live in Nova Santa Rita. The mother-in-law has residences in Canoas and Arroio do Sal. The Christmas where the tragedy occurred was in Maida’s (Zeli’s sister) apartment, in Torres.
In addition to Maida, Zeli’s other sister, Neuza, died in the early hours of December 24 after eating the cake with arsenic. Tatiana, niece, died after being hospitalized on the 25th.

The great-nephew, Matheus, and mother-in-law, Zeli, were hospitalized and were later discharged.
The cake was prepared by Zeli, who had used a cake poisoned with arsenic, placed by Deise, according to the Civil Police.
The police also found that before the cake, Deise killed her father-in-law, Paulo Luiz dos Anjos, also with arsenic, but added to powdered milk.
The accused was arrested on January 5th.
“Deise remains in temporary custody, the investigation continues, and according to the court decision, there are still steps to be taken to clarify the facts in the investigation”, informed the defense.
