The defense of Deise Moura dos Anjos, identified as responsible for the poisoning in the cake case in Torres, Rio Grande do Sul, reported in a note to CNN which will hire a private expert to analyze exams and investigation documents.
The reports from the General Institute of Expertise (IGP) point to the presence of arsenic in the cake that caused the death of three people in Torres. The sweet was prepared by mother-in-law Zeli dos Anjos, who would be Deise’s main target, according to the Civil Police.
“The defense of the accused, represented by the firm Cassyus Pontes Advocacia, expresses itself in the sense that there was access to the preliminary reports of the IGP”, informed the team in a note. “In this way, there is already contact with private criminal experts to evaluate official documentation and news published by the media.”
Deise would have poisoned the flour used by Zeli to prepare the cake.
Zeli prepared the cake on Christmas Eve. Seven people participated in the celebration, but not all of them ate the cake.
Zeli’s sisters, Neuza and Maida, died in the early hours of December 24 after eating the cake with arsenic. Tatiana, niece, died after being hospitalized on the 25th.
The great-nephew, Matheus, and mother-in-law, Zeli, were hospitalized and were later discharged.
The police also found that before the cake, Deise killed her father-in-law, Paulo Luiz dos Anjos, also with arsenic, but added to powdered milk.
According to the defense, the reports relating to the exhumation of Paulo’s body will also be evaluated by private experts.
The accused was arrested on January 5th.
“Deise remains in temporary custody, the investigation continues, and according to the court decision, there are still steps to be taken to clarify the facts in the investigation”, informed the defense.
