A group of about 50 migrants broke through the defenses on the border with Belarus and entered Poland near the village of Starzina, as the police announced today, while the situation at the border is escalating further.
Thousands of migrants, who have traveled to Belarus hoping to cross into the European Union, they have been trapped in the border area in cold conditions.
The European Union accuses Minsk of orchestrating the crisis to put pressure on the European bloc to impose sanctions, but Belarus has repeatedly denied the allegations. Some countries in the region have warned that the confrontation could escalate into a military conflict.
“Yesterday, before 5pm, about 50 people entered Poland near Starzina,” Podlaska police said in a Twitter post, adding that 22 Iraqi nationals were subsequently arrested.
In total, the Polish border guard announced that 223 attempts were made yesterday to cross the border illegally.
