Poland accuses Russia of interfering with presidential elections

Poland Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski said on Tuesday that the country faces an unprecedented attempt from Russia to interfere with its presidential election, while the campaign enters the final stages before the first round of the vote on May 18.

The Polish government states that its role as a Ukraine Aid Center has made the target country important for sabotage, cyber attacks, and Russian misinformation efforts.

Therefore, Warsaw would be on maximum warning for interference, especially after Romania canceled a presidential election in December due to allegations of Russian interference, he claims.

Russia repeatedly denied the accusations of interference in foreign elections and criticized the decision to cancel the claim in Romania.

“During the current presidential elections in Poland, we are facing an unprecedented attempt of interference with Russia’s electoral process,” Gawkowski told a defense conference.

According to him, “this is being done … (by) disseminate misinformation in combination with hybrid attacks on Polish critical infrastructure in order to paralyze the normal functioning of the state.”

The Ministry continued to state that the attacks targeted water and sewage companies, heating and energy plants and state administration bodies.

The level of Russian activity in terms of cyber attacks in Poland more than doubled compared to last year, he reported.

“Today, in Poland, every minute of my speech, about a dozen incidents against critical infrastructure were recorded,”

completed.

The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to a comment order sent by email.

The country said in March that there was a cyber attack to the Polish space agency.

In 2024, Poland said the state news agency was probably hit by a Russian cyber attack.

Warsaw and allies also claimed that Moscow is behind acts of criminal fire and sabotage in Europe. Moscow rejects the allegations.
