The American group Westinghouse was chosen by its government Poland for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country, rejecting competing bids from France’s EDF and South Korea’s KHNP, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced.
“We confirm that our nuclear power project will use Westinghouse’s reliable and safe technology”the Polish Prime Minister wrote in a post on Twitter. The decision is expected to be ratified by the cabinet on Wednesdayhe added.

Poland has been planning for years to switch to nuclear power generation for civilian purposes, and the issue of energy security came back to the fore after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“I think it sends a clear message to Russia that the North Atlantic Alliance is united in diversifying its energy supply and resisting Russian instrumentalization of energy.”commented the Minister of Energy of USA Jennifer Granholm.
The Warsaw decision “sends a clear message to (Russian President) Putin about the strength of the US-Polish alliance”said a high-ranking official of the American government.
The Morawiecki government is ambitious the country’s first nuclear power plant to be commissioned in 2033. The community of Hocevo, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, was chosen for the construction of the nuclear power plant.
