Poland: American paratroopers arrive at Rezov airport

Hundreds of US paratroopers arrived at Poland’s Rezov airport today as part of a deployment of several thousand troops to reinforce NATO’s east wing.

Agence France-Presse reporters saw the soldiers disembark from two Boeing C-17 transport military aircraft and board buses.

Rezov Airport is about 100 km from the border with Ukraine.

Other soldiers were coming and going at the airport in Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters. Armored vehicles, military trucks and dozens of soldiers were seen in a camp set up in and around a conference center, opposite the airport terminal.

“We do not know yet” how long this mission will last, said a sergeant who asked not to be named.

From February 5, soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Brigade, based in North Carolina, arrive at this airport near the village of Yasionka. The airport also operates as a civil service, serving the Podkarpaki area. Two Ryanair flights to London and Manchester took off today.

The United States has said it plans to temporarily deploy about 4,700 troops to Poland in response to reinforcements of Russian forces around Ukraine. With this aid, the American force in Poland will increase to 10,000 men.

General Chris Donahue told reporters at the start of the mission that US troops “will defend, if necessary, any NATO country.”
