THE Poland is checking whether it needs to request consultations under Article 4 of NATO’s military alliance treaty, a government spokesman said on Tuesday, following a report that an explosion that killed two people near the Ukrainian border was caused by stray Russian missiles.
The United States and Western allies said they were investigating but could not confirm a report on Tuesday that the explosion in the village of Przewodow was the result of stray Russian missiles. The Russian Ministry of Defense denied this.
“A moment ago we decided to check whether there are grounds for initiating proceedings under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty,” government spokesman Piotr Muller told reporters.
Article 4 allows NATO members to bring any matter of concern, especially security related, to the North Atlantic Council for discussion.
Muller also said that the Poland is increasing the readiness of some military units, but declined to answer any questions, including about the cause of the incident.
“It was decided just now to increase the readiness of some military combat units in the Poland and increase the combat readiness of other uniformed service units in our country,” he said.
