Poland considers expelling 45 Russian diplomats, Kremlin vows retaliation

Poland’s special services asked the Foreign Ministry for the expulsion of 45 Russian diplomats on Wednesday (23).

According to Polish spokesman Stanislaw Zaryn, some were working for the secret services under the cover and pretext of diplomatic work.

“The Internal Security Agency has identified 45 people — Russian secret service officers and persons associated with them — who have diplomatic status in Poland,” Zaryn told reporters, adding that those selected had conducted “intelligence activities against Poland as well as against our allies”.

A government spokesman said the Russian ambassador had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry, and decisions on further measures would be announced after the meeting.

In response, Russia has declared that it will retaliate if its diplomats are expelled from Poland, according to the RIA news agency, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry as a source.

No further details were provided on what the retaliations would be.

Currently, Poland, a member country of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), is the place that receives the most Ukrainian refugees who left the country due to the war.

United Nations estimates show that more than 2 million people crossed the border into Polish lands. In total, the conflict has generated more than 3.5 million refugees.
