The Polish government has approved a bill banning imports of Russian coal, a cabinet spokesman said on Tuesday.
“We do not want these imports to be possible anymore, although we realize that there is a risk associated with the fact that the European Union has not approved such actions to date,” Peter Miller told reporters in Warsaw.
EU sanctions should normally be agreed upon by the entire trade bloc, and Brussels could potentially punish countries acting unilaterally.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Warsaw has called on the European Union to include Russian fossil fuels in sanctions imposed by the bloc on Moscow.
Miller said Prime Minister Matthew Morawiecki would announce detailed plans to eliminate Russian energy supplies later this week.
