THE Poland and the Czech republic announced today the extension until November 2 of border controls implemented to tackle illegal immigration through their neighboring country, Slovakia. The two countries, like Austria, Slovakia’s neighbor to the west, they introduced the controls on October 4initially for a period of ten days.
Slovakia has recently seen an increase in the number of migrants who come largely from Serbia via Hungary and head for the wealthier countries of western Europe.
“Temporary controls will be extended until November 2”Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski told state radio.
Announcing this measure, Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said for his part that the national police checked 43,749 people and thus identified 283 irregular immigrants coming from Slovakia between October 4 and 9.
“We have also arrested and prosecuted 12 traffickers,” he said, according to AFP and the Athens News Agency.
Slovakia registered about 24,500 irregular migrants from January to August, compared with 10,900 for all of last year.
Bratislava, for its part, introduced border controls with Hungary on October 5 in response to the measure adopted by Prague, Vienna and Warsaw. Yesterday, the government announced the extension of the checks until November 3rd.
Germany, where many migrants are headed, tightened controls on its eastern borders with the Czech Republic and Poland in late September.
All these countries are members of the European Union and the Schengen zone.
The re-introduction of border controls within the Schengen area is only possible in exceptional circumstances and Brussels must be informed before these controls can be implemented.
