Poland: First NATO Member to Acquire Unmanned Aerial Vehicles from Turkey

THE Poland will buy 24 Bayraktar TB2 from Turkey, making it the first NATO member to acquire these unmanned, armed aircraft (UAV).

Speaking on public radio, Polish Defense Minister Marius Blazak said the Bayraktar TB2, the first of which is due to be delivered next year, would be equipped with anti-tank missiles. Warsaw will also buy a “package” of logistical support and training.

Blazak added that these UAVs “have proven their worth in wars”, adding that they will be maintained by a military company, without giving further details.

The agreement is set to be signed next week during Polish President Andrei Duda’s visit to Turkey.

Turkish company Baykar has sold UAVs in Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Qatar
and Libya. In March, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Saudi Arabia had also expressed interest in buying unmanned Turkish aircraft.

In April, Canada stopped licensing the export of UAV technology equipment to Turkey after concluding that the aircraft had been used by Azeri forces in the war with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. The embargoed equipment also includes cameras for Baykar armed aircraft.
