Poland is calling for tougher sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine poses a real threat to peace in Europe, Polish Prime Minister Matthew Morawiecki warned today.

“Today we are focusing on the situation in Ukraine, because it is an existential threat to peace in Europe,” Morawiecki said after meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels.

The Polish Prime Minister said that his country wants the strongest possible sanctions to be imposed on Russia, including the ban on the import of Russian coal.

“We can impose an embargo on Russian coal even tomorrow. We are ready for that, we just want the consent of the European Commission as soon as possible,” he said, calling on Europe to stop buying Russian gas and oil in the coming months.

Poland also proposed sanctions against Russia’s ally in Belarus as soon as possible, and according to Morawiecki, Ursula von der Leyen agreed.
