Poland is set to receive a 250m-euro loan from the World Bank to help households replace coal heating and insulate their homes, the bank said on Thursday.
Cloud is a major problem in Poland, as coal-fired households are responsible for much of the country’s air pollution, which the World Bank estimates kills 46,000 Poles each year.
“Our ambition for the next five years of our partnership is to support both carbon emission relief in the heating sector and the inclusion and pace of the program,” said Gallina A. Vincelette, World Bank Country Director for the European Union. .
The World Bank has in the past provided funding or air quality advice to countries such as China, India, Peru, Egypt, Chile and Mexico.
