NATO must take “concrete steps” to resolve the migration crisis on the border with Belarus, Polish Prime Minister Matthias Morawiecki said today, adding that Poland, Lithuania and Latvia could seek Article 4 consultations under the Article 4 .
Under this article, any allied country may request consultations when, in its view, it faces a threat to its territorial integrity, its political independence or its security.
“It is not enough for us to publicly express our concern. Now, we need concrete steps, but also the commitment of the whole alliance,” he told the Polish news agency PAP.
Thousands of migrants have traveled to Belarus, hoping to cross into the European Union, but end up trapped at the border in cold weather.
The EU accuses Minsk of orchestrating the crisis in order to pressure the European Union on the issue of sanctions, but Belarus has repeatedly denied this. Some countries in the region warn that the current tension could escalate into a military conflict.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, a key ally of Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko, has said Russia is ready to help ease the crisis, the Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing an interview with the Russian president.
Morawiecki told the PAP that European leaders would discuss extending sanctions against Belarus, including the complete closure of the border.
He added that the EU should finance the joint construction of a border wall.
