The leader of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) and Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski has resigned, the Polish news agency PAP reported today.
“I am not in government now (…) I have already submitted a request to the prime minister and it has been approved. As far as I know, the president has also signed it,” Kaczynski said.
Kaczynski, who also chaired the government’s National Security and Defense Committee, said he would be replaced by National Defense Minister Mario Blazac.
Kaczynski has previously said he wants to step down from the government to focus on the PiS ‘preparations for the 2023 parliamentary elections in Poland.
“I have decided that I must focus on the things that are most important for the future of Poland. I do not overestimate my role, but (…) the party must regain its power, because the most important moment for any political party in the world is approaching.” , he told the PAP.
The nationalist PiS has been in power in Poland since late 2015, but Kaczynski has been in government since 2020. He was the country’s prime minister from 2006 to 2007, and Lech’s twin brother was president from 2005 to 2010. was killed in a plane crash in western Russia.
