Poland may decide to impose new restrictions if the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise, Health Minister Adam Nijilski told RMF FM today as the country prepares to manage the spread of the Omicron variant.
Poland is facing a steadily high number of daily cases during the fourth wave of the pandemic, which forced the authorities to tighten measures in December.
“If we find this week that the upward trend of cases continues, with almost 20,000 hospital beds occupied, which is a very large number, then yes, we will take further restrictive measures,” he said.
“We will talk about schools, the closure of shopping malls, for example, but I do not want to go ahead,” he added.
Nidzelski also said that any decisions will be announced later in the week – on Wednesday or Friday.
Poland, a country of about 39 million people, has recorded more than 4.1 million cases of coronavirus and nearly 97,600 deaths.
