Poland ready to welcome people who will leave Ukraine in case of Russian invasion

European states are preparing sanctions against Russia that will be much harsher than those imposed after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the Polish prime minister said today.

“We are working on a package of specific sanctions, which will be much stronger than they were in 2014,” Mateusz Morawiecki told a news conference in Brussels, broadcast by state-run TV station TVP.

Poland is ready to provide assistance to people who will be forced to flee Ukraine in the event of a Russian invasion of the country, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said in a statement on Friday afternoon.

“As for the crisis that would surely arise in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, I want to emphasize that we are ready to help those who are forced to leave Ukraine,” he told Reuters in a joint news conference with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
