Poland says it won’t play against Russia in World Cup qualifiers

The Polish Football Federation said the country’s national team will not play a match for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Russia in March because of the invasion of Ukraine. The statement, made this Saturday (20), was made by the organization’s president, Cezary Kulesza.

Russia is scheduled to host Poland in Moscow for the semi-finals of their European qualifier play-off on March 24. Whoever advances faces Sweden or the Czech Republic on March 29; the winner earns a place in the Cup.

Kulesza said the federation is in talks with the federations of the Czech Republic and Sweden about the playoff matches scheduled for March, which will fill a spot for the World Cup.

“In light of the Russian Federation’s escalating aggression against Ukraine, the Polish national team will not play a match against the Russian Republic,” Kulesza said on Twitter.

“This is the only right decision. We are talking to the Swedish and Czech federations to present a common position to FIFA”.
