Poland has arrested a Spanish national of Russian descent on suspicion of involvement in foreign intelligence operations, the ABW Department of Homeland Security said today.
The man, identified as an agent of the Russian military intelligence service (GRU), was arrested in Przemysl, near the Polish-Ukrainian border, on the night of February 27-28, the service said in a statement.
According to sources close to the investigation, this person is called Pablo Gonthaleth and he carried two passports and two cards from Russian banks, while he used two different names.
The agency reports that the man carried out operations for the benefit of Russia and traveled to Europe and elsewhere impersonating the journalist.
“Before his arrest he planned to go to Ukraine to continue his activities there,” the statement added.
The man will initially be detained for three months and if convicted faces up to ten years in prison in Poland, the service concludes.
