Poland terminates agreement with Russia on Yamal pipeline

LAST UPDATE: 11.25

Poland has decided to end the intergovernmental agreement with Russia on the Yamal gas pipeline, the country’s Environment Minister Anna Moskwa said on Twitter on Monday, according to Reuters.

“Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has confirmed the correctness of the Polish government’s determination to become completely independent of Russian gas. We have always known that Gazprom was not a reliable partner,” Moskwa said.

“On May 13, the Polish government adopted a resolution terminating the agreement between the Polish government and the government of the Russian Federation. This is an agreement signed in 1993. After 30 years, we can say that the gas relations between the “Poland and Russia cease to exist,” Polish Energy Minister Piotr Naimski was quoted as saying on Polish radio, according to the Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

Speaking about the fate of the Polish section of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, Naimski said the infrastructure could be redirected to supplies from Germany.

“This section is owned by EuroPolGaz. It is managed by GAZ-Sistem, which is also the operator of the entire gas transmission system in the country. The Polish section of Yamal will be used in the same way as the other sections, which “At the same time, this section of the pipeline can be used to transport gas from Germany to Poland,” he said.

It is recalled that Gazprom suspended its operations with the Bulgarian Bulgargaz and the Polish PGNiG on April 27, due to their refusal to pay for natural gas in Russian rubles.
