Poland announced on Tuesday (8) that it is ready to deploy all of its MiG-29 fighter jets immediately and free of charge at the US Air Force’s Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
The planes will be made available to Washington to supply them to Ukraine, according to a statement from the country’s Foreign Ministry.
“At the same time, Poland requests the United States to provide us with used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities. Poland is ready to immediately establish the conditions for the purchase of the planes,” he added.
The Polish government in the statement urged “other NATO allies – owners of MIG-29 jets – to act in the same vein”.
However, a senior State Department official said the United States was not consulted before the declaration on readiness to transfer jets to the US in Germany.
“I saw this announcement from the government of Poland when I was literally driving here today,” Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing.
“So, as far as I’m aware, it hasn’t been pre-consulted with us that they plan to give us these planes,” she said.
“I look forward, when this hearing is over, to come back to my table and see how we respond to their proposal to hand over the planes to us,” he said, noting that the US and Poland have been in consultations for a few days on this topic.
A senior US defense official told the CNN who were aware of the Polish government’s announcement and “have nothing to offer at the moment”.
