An official request from Poland was received today by Germany for the re-export of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Balzak said today.
“Germany has already received our request to accept the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine,” Balzac pointed out on Twitter, while appealing to Berlin to join “the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine with Leopard 2. This is a our common goal, because the security of all of Europe is at stake”.
Warsaw has indicated that it is in discussion with about 15 countries on this issue. THE Ukraine has long requested heavy tanks in order to succeed in breaking the lines of Russian forces and recapturing areas it has lost. Germany, whose approval is required for the re-export of Leopard 2s, is reluctant to agree to the delivery of these tanks to Kyiv, fearing that Moscow will escalate the conflict.
Chancellor’s decision
“At the end of the day, of course, the chancellery will take the decision, with the agreement of the government,” commented today the secretary of the German Foreign Ministry during a defense conference organized in Berlin by the Handelsblatt newspaper.
“My minister’s view on the matter is known, I believe,” he added, referring to German minister Analena Burbock, who said on Sunday that Berlin would not block countries wishing to offer Leopard 2 to Kyiv.
