Police arrest doctor for plastic surgery that resulted in death in RJ

Police officers from the Copacabana police station (12th DP), in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro, arrested plastic surgeon Heriberto Ivan Arias Camacho this Thursday (11). He was found at home, in the Freguesia neighborhood, in the west of the city.

The Colombian doctor was responsible for carrying out liposuction that ended in the death of housewife Lindama Benjamin de Oliveira, aged 58, in March last year.

According to the Civil Police, the report from the Legal Medical Institute (IML) indicated that Lindama had a perforation in the intestine with hemorrhage. She died hours after undergoing plastic surgery on her abdomen.

The procedure was carried out at the Bitée Cirurgia Plástica e Aesthetics Hospital, in Barra da Tijuca and, according to investigations, the victim paid R$16,000 for the procedure.

The Rio Court accepted the complaint presented by the Public Ministry and ordered the preventive arrest of the Colombian doctor. In the decision, judge Tula Correa de Melo, from the 3rd Criminal Court, highlighted that “the accused is identified as the author of the serious homicide qualified by the set of evidence collected during the criminal investigation”.

The judge also gave a period of ten days for the plastic surgeon to present his defense, in addition to offering documents, specifying the intended evidence and calling witnesses.

On social media, Lindama's sister, Rosilene Batista Jesus de Melo, commented on the doctor's arrest.

“I know it won't bring my sister back, but justice is being served. I, as a healthcare professional, know that if he had done anything to save my sister's life, she would be alive today,” she posted.
