A man accused of killing his wife was arrested by the Amazonas Civil Police. The crime took place in 2018. João Paulo da Silva, 42, was convicted of the femicide of Letícia Jeffreys Nogueira, 35. The victim was seven months pregnant when she was suffocated to death.
According to the police, investigations showed that the crime occurred as a result of numerous arguments between the couple, due to the fact that he did not accept the end of the relationship.
“During one of these arguments, he suffocated and killed his pregnant wife. He then hid her body, which was found three days later, near his house, in a wooded area on that branch,” explained police chief Ricardo Cunha, head of the Homicide and Kidnapping Division.
According to the police authorities, at the time of the crime, the perpetrator was arrested, but was later released.
During the trial, the court sentenced him to 17 years in prison for aggravated homicide and for concealing his wife’s body. Since the court ruling, he has been considered a fugitive from justice. We received reports of the offender’s whereabouts, but were unable to immediately arrest him, which only occurred on Monday (29).
