The Civil Police of the Federal District launched an operation this Thursday (16) to dismantle a criminal organization specializing in digital fraud using deepfake technology to carry out scams over the internet.
According to an investigation by the Special Police for the Repression of Cybercrimes, the criminal group created fraudulent videos manipulating the image and voice of presenter Marcos Mion to promote false promotions for a restaurant chain.
Deepfake is a technique that allows you to alter a video or photo with the help of artificial intelligence. With it, for example, the face of the person in the scene can be exchanged for that of another; or what the person says can be modified.
The victims, when clicking on the ads, were directed to fake websites where they made payments for supposed discount vouchers, but which were never delivered.
The investigation revealed a sophisticated criminal structure that used a technology company as a front for crime. “The group used advanced digital marketing and social engineering techniques to increase the reach of fraud, including sponsored advertisements on social networks and automated systems for processing fraudulent payments”, explains delegate Eduardo Fabbro.
This Thursday, three people under investigation were arrested and four search and seizure warrants were executed. Two imported vehicles were seized, as well as documents, electronic devices and other materials related to the crimes. One of the perpetrators confessed to committing the crimes, according to police.
Investigations indicate that dozens of victims were injured in the Federal District, with losses still being investigated.
Those investigated will be responsible for the crimes of electronic fraud, criminal association and money laundering, with a maximum penalty of 21 years in prison. The Civil Police continues investigations to identify other possible parties involved and other victims of the criminal scheme.
THE CNN contacted Marcos Mion’s team and is awaiting a response.
